Bald Head - the first big WA Trail for us

I’d also like to use this platform to share our hikes and tours, giving you a better glimpse into the landscapes of Western Australia. I’ll start with this article on the “Bald Head” Trail, which we did during Christmas season last year. It was one of our first major hiking adventures in Western Australia since we emigrated here

Christmas holidays with challenges

We embarked on this hike during our Christmas vacation, where we planned to drive from Perth to Esperance. The route, about 1000 km long, included various camping spots along the way. Unfortunately, we had to cut the trip short because Rudi, our vehicle, broke down and wouldn’t start anymore… :( But we did make it to Bald Head, and even a few kilometers beyond, before we had to turn back. However, let’s focus on the story of the phenomenal hike instead.

Always take enough water

We knew about the Bald Head hike from one of the YouTube videos we sometimes watch. We particularly enjoy following "Cam Bostock," who features many cool hiking tours: Cam Bostock - YouTube

The big mistake we made was not reading the sign at the start, which I’ve shown you in the picture. In the future, we’ll definitely make sure to do that. Most major hiking trails here have such signs with ratings and some tips. As we learned, these are really important to take seriously. In our case, we underestimated the combination of the trail and the weather conditions. It was a cool summer day, around 16°C, but VERY windy. As the sign indicates, hiking in windy weather is not necessarily recommended. The trail is flanked by the sea on both sides and is very narrow. When it’s windy, it can actually make you wobbly, however strange that might sound. With constant ups and downs, the 12.5 km were quite strenuous, and we only had 1 liter of water per person instead of the recommended 3 liters... But we made it, and the views along the trail were truly phenomenal. At the end, there was a huge cairn, and we added our stone to it—yay! We definitely want to hike it again in the future, but with better preparation. ;)
