Coincidence or destiny?

Writer's picture: Steffi Steffi

A few weeks ago, my dad visited, and we decided to embark on a multi-day tour through the southwestern part of Australia. In the end, we covered over 1000 km in 5 days. However, that's not the main story here. What happened on this trip shifted our lives in a new direction and served as a reminder that we can create our own reality and achieve our dreams if we’re brave enough.

Off the beaten path at the other end of the world

Of course, the "Valley of the Giants" was on our trip list—an essential for my dad, and we can’t get enough of those magnificent trees either. It’s hard to grasp just how enormous they are, and it’s nearly impossible to capture their size in pics. I’ll share a few pictures, though; perhaps they’ll give you a glimpse of their splendor.

Planning the trip, I looked for accommodations. Given the extensive driving we were doing, we ended up staying somewhere different each night, and since it was winter in Australia, we decided not to camp this time but to look for Airbnbs. I found a place in Hazelvale—close to the Valley of the Giants and, according to the map, relatively remote. It sounded perfect for us. However, we couldn’t quite picture how remote it would be at the time of booking. When the GPS showed 15 more minutes of driving as we turned off the main road, it slowly dawned on us just how isolated this accommodation really was.

The Kokaburra - the blackbird of Australia

Finally arrived, we settled into a lovely wooden cabin. It was simple but had everything we needed, including a wood stove. The owner gave us a tour, and I was so enchanted by the place that I absentmindedly asked if they were looking for people to live there permanently. It felt like I wasn’t asking the question myself but as if something else was asking through me. Anyway, she responded completely seriously and unexpectedly that, yes, she was indeed looking for someone exactly like that. And so, the story began, which is still unfolding and I’ll surely share more about if everything works out as we hope. That evening, we listened to a kookaburra "laughing" at sun set (like the blackbirds in Germany) and couldn’t believe what a beautiful spot we had discovered.

Caretaker - a job of its own

Prue, the owner, is between Marcus and my age and lives with her 5-year-old daughter on 180 hectares of land, which includes a river. The property features four log cabins for rent, named "Che Sera Sera," a well-known motto. In addition to managing these cabins and raising her daughter, Prue runs a farm with cows, chickens, ducks, a large fruit orchard, and an avocado farm. She practices permaculture, bakes her own sourdough bread, and is involved with the "Walpole Wilderness" group to protect the local landscape. She appreciates yoga and has considered hosting retreats but has struggled to find the time. To my surprise, the secluded spot I had envisioned for yoga retreats already exists, and it’s a matter of having ideas, believing in them, being open, and connecting with the right people.

Prue is currently looking for a caretaker, primarily to help with the cleaning of the chalets and also for work on the farm, especially with the avocados. Prue has a “caretaker’s house” that Marcus and I couldn’t have imagined more perfectly. Besides Prue and her daughter, Ryan also lives there and helps out when he’s not traveling. Last week, we did a trial work period, and what can I say: it was just amazing, we had the best time even while working, and we all agreed that we want to make it work somehow. Even though we won’t be moving there permanently right now — neither of us is really up for another big move ;) — we’re taking on the challenge as a side job. And then let's see what unfolds. There’s definitely more than enough potential, and those who know me can guess that I already have plenty of ideas... :)
