Since we emigrated about a year ago, our lives have been completely turned upside down. Not much remains as it once was. While this was expected, there are still numerous aspects of daily life that have changed in ways I hadn’t anticipated at first. One thing I was curious about from the beginning was my own yoga practice. Amid so much change, this was something I was determined to keep stable. However, there have certainly been challenges along the way.
The time difference
As most of you probably know, I regularly take classes with Som. I was determined to keep this up, but I knew things would have to change: now it was up to me to adjust, not him. In Australia, the day starts earlier— we are now 2.5 hours ahead of India. This meant I could no longer attend my 6 a.m. class with him unless I wanted to wake him up at 3:30 a.m. By the time it’s morning for him, it’s already midday for me. So, this required a significant adjustment to my previous routine.
The second challenge was the sudden lack of a structured routine. With a "normal office job," everything is relatively regulated—even with flexible hours, you have a routine for when you start working, what you want to get done in the morning, when you take lunch, and when you finish work. Now that I’m self-employed—with yoga and consulting—and working mainly for companies in Europe, which means a different time zone, I had to adapt. I’ve made this work for me, and now I know: my mornings are primarily for myself, my home, garden, errands, appointments, etc. In the afternoons, I either do my yoga classes or start working, and I schedule my meetings and potentially another yoga session if I didn’t manage to do it at midday.
Patience is the key here
It’s clear that not everything can be perfect from the start. Especially with myself, I’m usually not very patient, and in the first weeks after arriving here, the lack of a yoga routine really stressed and frustrated me. But that’s also part of yoga: accepting the situation as it is and making the best of it. It’s the small moments that are important here, and I try to enjoy them daily. Now, nearly a year later, things have settled quite well. When we’re on the road discovering Australia, everything gets a bit mixed up again, and Marcus’s new work pattern of “2 weeks on, 2 weeks off” adds to the complexity. But I have a first solution in sight: I bought a new “Yoga Travel Mat” after ruining my previous one in the hot Australian sun last year. ;) Combined with Starlink, I should be able to maintain my yoga routine even while we’re in the forests. I’m excited and looking forward to it.
